Turn Your CORTEX Unit Into an Efficient HVAC Economizer

The HVAC Automatic Control is a lesser-known element of HVAC systems. The HVAC economizer can greatly reduce your energy costs. One of the most power-hungry systems at your site is probably the HVAC system. Using indoor and outdoor temperature sensors as well as built-in logic and math functions, the Cortex Series units can be configured to create an economizer function for your system. If your indoor temperature isn’t too high, and the outdoor temperature is cool enough, an economizer will allow your refrigerant-based AC to take a break while the outdoor air does most of the cooling work.

HOW TO USE THE DTPI WITH SNMP TO MEASURE TEMPERATURES AND TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIALS

Davicom’s 4-input DTPI can be used to measure temperatures and temperature differentials to autonomously take advantage of cooler outdoor air to save on A/C costs. Broadcast and Two-Way radio transmission sites can therefore see their HVAC electrical costs decrease significantly. Temperatures of critical site equipment such as generators, UPS’s, batteries, pumps and computer racks can all be closely monitored and managed thanks to the DTPI’s sensors.

Sensor readings from individual sensors can be read through SNMP GETs by the Cortex unit and fed to its Math Functions where they can be subtracted and analyzed to create the Economizer functionality. Adding a third sensor reading into the equation (from the transmitter’s exhaust air for example), to start up the A/C if the outside air ultimately fails to provide the required cooling effect, easily provides a failsafe functionality.

HOW TO CREATE A "DELTA TEMPERATURE DETECTOR" USING THE MATH FUNCTIONS.

Building an economizer requires one important functionality: the ability to subtract two variable temperature values from each other. Not simply checking if one temperature is above or below a pre-set threshold, but calculating the difference between two values, where the result can be positive, negative or even zero. Davicom’s smart site management units have this functionality built right in. In fact, besides simple subtractions, the units can do addition, multiplication, division and even logarithms. These Math Functions can then be combined and cascaded to produce more complex equations.

The way an economizer works is to constantly check if the outdoor air temperature is lower than the indoor air temperature, and to also check if this difference is great enough to use the outside air as a cooling measure. If yes, the Air Conditioner can be turned off and the outside air can be drawn-in to provide essentially free cooling.
